Quotes That Helped Me Through Hard Times

Even before the Pandemic and pandemonium 2020 brought into all of our lives, I was going through a rough time. I felt alone, lost, worthless, and scared. Reading these quotes when I was having one of my bad days eased the pain, even if only for a moment.

1.) “I know what it’s like to be afraid of your own mind.” – Spencer Reid, Criminal Minds

This first quote comes from a TV show I started watching over the summer, Criminal Minds. I remember hearing it for the first time— it gave me hope. I thought I had been alone in feeling afraid of my mind, of the incessant noise that refused to let me rest.

2.) “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” – Winnie the Pooh

A couple of months ago, my group of friends walked out of my life. For a while, I was left numb from the betrayal. After the initial pain, I realized I was incredible lucky to have had them in my life at all. I get to keep the sweet memories, after all.

3.) “Some people are so poor, all they have is money.” – Patrick Meagher

This year has forced me to recognize the value of things I have previously taken for granted. Family, friends, fresh air, food on the table— I have always been so blessed and I never appreciated it enough. Money truly isn’t everything.

4.) “Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” – Samuel Beckett

I have a bad habit of being too hard on myself. If I can’t get something wrong the first time, I blame my lack of intelligence/talent and want to give up. I have been working to embrace failure. It is, after all, inevitable.

5.) “There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They are messengers of overwhelming grief and unspeakable love.” – Washington Irving

This quote speaks for itself. Crying doesn’t mean someone is weak. It shows strength and true love.
