Top Gun : Maverick – Movie Review
Premiering 36 years after the original Top Gun film, Top Gun: Maverick is one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2022. Despite the premiere being delayed for reasons including the pandemic, it proved to be well worth the wait. Without getting into spoilers, I will say that Top Gun: Maverick brought everything fans could have hoped for and more.
Though you do not need to watch the 1986 original to enjoy this 2022 sequel, I would recommend viewing it beforehand to fully understand and appreciate this new film. There are so many parallels callbacks throughout the movie that make the film feel interactive. The pacing is unlike anything I have ever viewed before; you will be on the edge of your seat for the entire two hours.
One thing that stuck out to me was the casting. Miles Teller portraying Goose’s son was the best decision production could have ever made. It is eerie how much he transformed himself into the character of Rooster. Every actor in this film truly became their characters. Sitting in the theater, I forgot I was watching a movie. The natural acting and phenomenal visuals added to the immersion of the entire experience.
Soundtracks in movies can elevate a film tenfold. Bringing back the music from the original was a phenomenal choice. If you saw the original back when it first came out, I imagine the nostalgia would be overwhelming. The music only adds to the suspense in the action scenes. When you see the similarities between the credits in the original and this movie, it is breathtaking.
One thing I was not expecting was the humor throughout the film. Between the long spells of action and brief heart-to-hearts, there was a level of comedy. The writers found a way to integrate humor without breaking up the tone of the movie. I especially appreciate how they included Val Kilmer’s character, Iceman. They handled his character beautifully.
The romance in this movie was very mature and kept the movie appropriate to watch with your family. Nothing in this film felt unrealistic. Every character had realistic motivations. Every character has their own story and their own unique personality.
36 years later, Tom Cruise somehow looks the same and brings the same energy of Maverick that fans know and love. If you have the means, you should see Top Gun: Maverick as soon as possible. This is a movie that I can not recommend enough.
