We Were Too Young
By Ashley O’Hare
We were too young.
When we gazed upon the night sky,
we saw pretty, shiny lights.
Their backstories were lost to us.
Their long histories;
how they collaborated to create constellations
never crossed our minds.
Maybe if we knew,
we would have been spared
the trivial irritation
of their poorly photographed translation.
We didn’t know
the art of appreciation.
We didn’t know
the benefits of benevolence.
We were too young
for the whole truth.
