“Twenty-One” Poem of the Day (2022)

Twenty-One

By Ashley O’Hare

At 21 the whole world

is supposed to be wide open

with endless possibilities.

Everything is at your fingertips.

It is presented as

an exciting fact;

something to look forward to.

Let me be the honest one:

it is terrifying.

My life has become so crowded

that I cannot breathe.

My time has become spread thin

to please everybody but me.

Relaxation is a waste.

It is now or never

and I am leaning toward never

because I have never before

been this exhausted

not now I desperately

need to rest

before I can face the world

again.
