Lost Heartbeats
By Ashley O’Hare
I have read the reports,
seen photos of you in public court.
I have looked a million times;
I still cannot believe my eyes.
Were you out of your mind
when you committed your crimes?
How did you change so much
from your teenage prime?
The youthful eyes in my mind
want to defend you again;
to suddenly turn blind
to every warning sign.
I can’t make me believe
another one of your lies.
They tell me I’m lucky-
I got away from you in early.
You’re the only person who knows
that my heart had already stopped beating.
I love the part “The youthful eyes in my mind want to defend you again”.
Your poems are very relatable and the words are very well woven together.
