“Small Town Clique”
By Ashley O’Hare
It’s funny how
fitting in
never ends up
working out
even in small towns.
I tried daily
to contort myself,
but ultimately I failed.
I was never taught to lie well.
So I keep my heart
buried deep inside;
my face turned down
until I can run and hide.
It’s too much work–
a full time job,
to lurk outside,
hoping to one day
be accepted.
