“Happiness”

Happiness:
Is it a given–
are we destined to discover it?
Is it a luxury–
can we all afford it?
My youthful naivety
led me to believe
the former.
I laid back
without a care in the world
and awaited
my golden joy.
The harsh truth
crashed in.
Work is required
to smile again.
