“An Ordinary Night” Poem of the Day (2022)

“An Ordinary Night”

By Ashley O’Hare

It was an ordinary night

many moons ago

when I stayed up too late

gazing at the starlight:

the first time

my heart had been hurt.

Holding together

the shattering pieces

only wounded me further.

With blood on my hands

and salt on my cheeks,

I vowed to never again

let my heart feel the sun’s heat.

No store carries glue

strong enough to undo

this level of damage.

I am still living

with an embarrassing substitute

of the piece of me

I failed to protect.
