“Comforting Stress” Poem of the Day (2023)

“Comforting Stress”

By Ashley O’Hare

Stress is addictive.

Its absence leaves me terrified.

A calm mind is foreign-

it must be wrong.

I need the noise.

I need the doubt.

It’s a dependable presence

I cannot live without.

When I got a taste

of pure peace,

my heart raced-

my brain demanded a retreat.

Science tells me it’s unhealthy,

but it is a force I am powerless against.

If I let go of it,

I’ll spend my days tense.
