How to Become More Confident
“Confidence is everything.”
“Fake it until you make it.”
We are told that confidence is important, but rarely given the tips on how to grow our confidence. I will be the first to say that I am not an expert on the topic, but it is something that I have been working on. Here are some things that have helped me become a more confident person as I have gotten older:
- Style your hair
If you have had the same hairstyle since middle school, it may be time for an update. This can be anything from a new cut, color, or even something as simple as changing where your hair is parted. Whatever makes you feel happy when you look in the mirror— focus on that. The change does not need to be drastic to have monumental results.
- Wear comfortable clothing
Wearing comfortable clothing does not mean you should walk around in only sweatpants. Find clothes that complement your body and make you feel good. Don’t worry about the trends— trying to keep up with them will only hurt your bank account anyway. Have fun and express yourself with your personal style.
- Listen to good music
Music may be a fun way to pass the time, but it is important that you are intentional about the songs you add to your playlist. Every song is filled with lyrics that hold messages. Whether you are consciously paying attention to the words or not, they have an impact on your confidence. I love a good cry to a Sleeping At Last song, but it does nothing for making me feel positive and confident. Listening to uplifting music is an easy way to set the proper tone for your day.
- Have goals for yourself
It is important to be grateful for what you have. It is equally as important to allow yourself to dream about the future. Remind yourself that you deserve to grow as a person and reach the goals you set for yourself. Knowing that there is room for improvement in my life has been a strong motivator for me. When you find the areas in which you want to grow, make a plan and take action. Block out the self deprecating thoughts that you are not good enough— you are. Just take the first step.
- Keep positive people in your life
The people around you have a strong impact on how you see yourself and the world. Be cautious about negative people in your life. I’m not saying you have to cut out people that are not always positive— everybody has a bad day. However there are some people that claim to be our friends but only bring us down. I had to cut some people out of my life. It wasn’t easy, but the results made it worth it. Spend more time with the people that truly care about you and add light to your day.
