“A Changed Person”
By Ashley O’Hare
I’m a changed person,
but not in the way I can brag.
I didn’t tour the world
or realize a strength I never knew I had.
I’m no longer naive.
I now know what lurks in the shadows.
I can never shake the paranoia
that I am approaching the gallows.
My plans were derailed;
I have lost my ability to adapt
and spend most of my days
chasing my own tail.
Time has worn me down.
I’ve lost the strength
to keep my chin up.
I’m at the mercy of life now.
