“The End” Poem of the Day (2023)

“The End”

By Ashley O’Hare

Happily ever after?

When does the story end?

Does life continue

after the fable is told?

Is anybody fulfilled

with a pile of silver and gold?

Are we destined to learn

only one moral?

Ending on a high note

is divine in theory.

Storytelling makes it easy.

Ink cannot have a change of heart.

Fictional characters have no fatal flaws.

Their stories are concrete-

each detail permanently pressed on sheets.

What if that suddenly changed?

If on the final page

Prince Charming was now deranged?

“And they lived happily ever after”

or

“Find out the damage in the next chapter?”
